The order that matters
You can do all of this yourself. If it gets you unstuck without hiring anyone, that is a good outcome.
Look it up in public WHOIS
Search your domain in any public WHOIS tool. Look at the registrant and the registrar. If the registrar is a platform you never signed up with directly, that is your answer.
Work out which of the four you are
Own registrar: you hold the account and the domain. Platform-purchased: often registered to them. Agency-purchased: registered to whoever built your site. Subdomain only: there is nothing to transfer, because you never had it.
Get the auth code before there is a dispute
Transfers need an authorization code from the current registrar. Requesting it while the relationship is fine is routine. Requesting it during an argument is not.
Move DNS in the right order
Root record first, then www, then verification and mail records. Wrong order and the site goes dark mid-change.
